Building a better future together

2020 has been a challenging year in many ways. The spotlight placed on institutional racism and entrenched inequality by the #BlackLivesMatter movement has a particular resonance in South Africa where we still deal with the legacy of racial segregation.

So, while we were very excited to win two categories at the African Legal Awards last week, we were just as proud to be shortlisted for the “CSR, Diversity, Transformation and Economic Empowerment Award”. Our place on the shortlist is in recognition of the Lighthouse Academy, an integral part of Lighthouse Law.

When we founded Lighthouse in 2017 it was with a commitment to promote development and transformation in South Africa. From the overwhelming response we received to job ads, we were aware that many black legal graduates, having overcome extremely challenging circumstances to attain their degree, found it very difficult to find a position post qualification. Our hope was that by creating a training and development programme that targeted these students, we would empower them to move into the job market with marketable legal skills and knowledge.

Now in its third year, we remain committed to the Lighthouse Academy and are pleased that a number of our students have moved through the Academy into CA positions at Lighthouse, while others have found roles within the broader legal community.

None of this would have been possible without our clients and we wanted to take this opportunity to thank them for their support. They have championed the Lighthouse Academy and their continued support of our business has in turn enabled us to commit to the Academy. The Academy’s success is also their success.

Have a look at our website for more information about the Lighthouse Academy, including blogs by our students about their experiences. We look forward to welcoming the next intake to the Academy in January 2021!
