The Power of Small Change

The last two years have been characterised by much uncertainty. The impact on people, businesses and our economy has made long term strategies more challenging to envisage and action. But on the flip side, in some ways, it has also helped bring greater focus and a greater appreciation for those things that are within our control – the here and now.

We held our Strategy Day recently, and whereas in past years we’ve taken a broader and more long-term view of strategy, this year we focussed on ‘Small Changes’ that could be implemented across our practice and our internal processes to achieve greater efficiency in how we service our clients, how we run our firm, and how we innovate. In doing so it became increasingly evident how powerful the cumulative effect of small changes can be. The process was empowering, creative, energising, and rewarding – and it’s given us much to look forward to in 2022.

2021 was a busy year on the delivery front prompting 13 new hires and increasing our team to 30 lawyers across SA and the UK. Our lawyers have a strong combination of legal, organisational and tech skills, and we believe strongly in allowing them the space to find their areas of interest and pursue them. We want Lighthouse to be a place that encourages new ways of thinking and better, more efficient ways of doing things.

We’ve taken our legal tech offering to a new level this year, adding a host of new features to LightHub and are busy launching in the USA. With a focus on working smart and enhancing efficiency for legal teams, the feedback from LightHub users has been overwhelmingly positive. The future of legal efficiency truly is digital. In 2020 LightHub won the Africa Legal Award for Innovation and this year we got to showcase LightHub with its new features at the Capital Factory in Austin, USA and at the Legal Innovation & Tech Fest in SA. To find out more about LightHub or to arrange a demo, get in touch here.

Our 2021 awards and accolades include a Band 2 listing by Chambers for IT & Telecommunications, a listing by Best Lawyers for Tech Law & Telecommunications Law and finalist listings in the Africa Legal Awards in three categories namely Best Use of Tech, Innovation, and one that we’re particularly proud of - CSR, Diversity & Empowerment for our Lighthouse Academy. We’re looking forward to welcoming our new interns to the Academy in 2022 and continuing our commitment to the development of black law students through its internship program.

In our current environment, where certainty seems elusive, adaptability and resilience have become high currency in the business world. Looking back, we’re immensely proud of the way our team has carried forward those values this year. The pandemic has changed so much about how we work and interact with each other – but somehow it seems to have also made us value community and connection more than ever before. It is uncertain precisely what next year will hold but whatever it is we’ll continue to adapt and move forward – one small change at a time.
